Life, Uh, Finds a Way

Hey there! Welcome to the personal webpage of author JD Troutt and the novella "Life, Uh, Finds a Way".

Last updated December 5, 1993.

1993. Los Angeles. Sam, Ellie, and Mateo find themselves in a story told through imagined texts, real-world interactions, and allusions to the era's iconic literature, music, and art.

Life, Uh, Finds a Way vividly conjures the early '90s, a time more innocent and more dangerous, before social media and global online culture.

Sam is a young woman pursuing her goal of being an on-air talent in local radio while struggling with mysterious anxiety and guilt. Ellie is charismatic, sarcastic, and tough—swatting away record store guys at every turn. Mateo is living his dream as a story artist for a cultural powerhouse, finding the balance between his generation's independence and his parents' tradition.

As the trio navigates their challenges and opportunities, a portrait of life in the early '90s emerges that can only be seen in the rearview—reminding us that whatever we may face, life, uh, does find a way.
